I think it might have been born out of the original house scene in the US at the back end of the 80s. Scene seen as a safer alternative to hiphop in the clubs. I believe that is where jacking etc first came about.....
one day i shall learn the style...

as far as i know (this is coming from someone of the younger/new generation, but someone who has spent some time studying)

house has absolutely nothing to do with the holland clubs

house originated in chicago/ny...with chicago doing more jacking (body movements) and ny puttin it down for the footwork.

house can be thought of as the opposite of hip hop.

while hip hop is real competitive, masculinity (not end all, be all, but some defining characteristics)

house is a lot more feminine/sensual. not about battles/showing your stuff, but about vibin and having a good time.

when house first started, the clubs/scene were mainly populated by gay blacks. there was a need for house music back then, a need seperate from the mainstream. the mainstream, it was tough enough for blacks to be accepted by the media, much less gay blacks (as well as gay _____).

a result of the types of people going to these parties and also their backgrounds (ranging from latin dancers to ballet dancers), house has certain smooth groove to it.

The Relationships of House Dance

with Other Dances
There have been many misconceptions surrounding house dance and house music over the years. Many of these have evolved due to a lack of understanding and access to the underground elements that have created the depth of the house dance experience. It is often confused or overlapped with elements of other dances or cultures that have similar attributes but a very different history. House is related to many other forms, but not necessarily a direct descendent and the differentiation is fundamental

House is not a descendent of hip hop. It is related by way of musical experimentation of the early 80s. Many hip hop dancers crossed into house during the late 80s and early 90s bringing with them the ability to sequence steps and address more percussive rhythms. With a few exceptions, there was a pre-existing vocabulary to house often referred to as lofting that dates back to the mid 70s and has matured over an extended period of time. The hip hop mannerisms (i.e. battling, clothing, and language) influence a period in house
